Equine Studies in Horse Care NVQ Level 2

The course combines day release study at college with on the job training with an employer. It is designed for people with limited experience of working with horses and combines lectures and project work with employment experience. The course is broad based looking at a wide range of skills needed to work in the Equine Industry.

Each apprentice has a nominated Training Co-ordinator, who will provide co-ordination between the employer, the College and the apprentice, giving continuity and support throughout the course.

NVQ Level 2 in Horse Care - units include:

  • Prepare and clean stables
  • Maintain the health and well-being of horses
  • Prepare horses for use
  • Prepare and maintain horses on grazing land
  • Prepare and provide non-ridden exercise and aftercare
  • Load and unload horses under supervision
  • Ensure own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Maintain effective working relationships

Technical Certificate

Level 2 Certificate in Health and Safety for those working in the Equine Industry

Key Skills

Application of Number, Communication and Working with Others at Level 1

Assessment

Assessment is carried out on a continuous basis involving collecting evidence from a work placement which is also incorporated into a portfolio.

Minimum Age: 16

Duration: Two years, one day per week

Entry Requirements:
A genuine and practical interest in horses

Typical Employment:
A groom, yard hand, livery yard assistant, riding school assistant or stud farm assistant

NVQ Level 3 and BTEC National Award / Certificate / Diploma
