Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care
This programme is designed for students with no previous experience of Animal Care to gain a good understanding of the industry and the practical skills needed for employment. The course combines lectures and demonstrations with practical instruction and industrial visits.
Course Content
Units may include:
- Maintain animal health and welfare
- Undertake practical animal feeding
- Maintain animal accommodation
- Undertake work related experience in the land-based Industries
- Understand the basic principles of animal biology
- Introduction to the principles and practices of animal behaviour and handling
- Contribute to the care of exotic animals
Additional qualifications & Functional Skills
Your programme of study will include a First Aid Certificate.
Functional Skills
All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.
Assessment
Assessment is continuous with assignments, projects and practical work and includes 150 hours of work experience over the duration of the 1 year course.

Entry Requirements:
2 GCSE passes at grade D or above in maths, English or science/ equivalent qualifications or experience. Places will be offered subject to interview and initial assessments.
Typical Employment:
Animal sanctuaries, pet shops, catteries or kennels.
Further Study:
Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management, or alternatively enter employment and continue training through the Apprenticeship Scheme.
