Animal Care:
NVQ Levels 1 & 2
These courses involve attendance at College for one day per week and four days at an appropriate workplace.
The Level 2 programme can be delivered as part of an Apprenticeship programme
The courses are designed for those with little or no previous experience of the Animal Care Industry and combines lectures and project work with employment experience. The courses are broad-based, looking at a wide range of skills needed in the Animal Care Industry.
Units include:
- Health and safety
- Maintain the cleanliness of the working environment
- Provide exercise opportunities for animals
- Prepare and groom animals
- Develop personal performance and maintain working relationships
- Receive and store information
- Assist with the movement of animals
- Provide feed and water to animals
- Maintain the health and well being of animals
- Establish and maintain animals in their accommodation
- Control and restrain animals
Additional qualifications
If taken as part of the Apprenticeship scheme, your programme of study will include Emergency First Aid, a Technical Certificate and Key Skills.
Assessment
Assessment is carried out on a continuous basis involving practical observations in the work place, related knowledge tests and the collection of evidence which is incorporated into a portfolio.

A genuine and practical interest in caring for animals. Learners must be employed in the animal care industry to attain practical competencies required to complete the NVQ

Animal sanctuaries, pet shops, catteries or kennels.
