Animal Care:
NVQ Levels 2 & 3 in Veterinary Nursing (RCVS) Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
The course comprises one day per week at Holme Lacy and four days working in a registered veterinary practice. Year one of the course will lead to the NVQ Level 2 qualification and year two to the NVQ Level 3 qualification. After successful completion of the two year programme and RCVS examinations, you will achieve the full NVQ level 2 in Veterinary Nursing and will be listed at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
This programme can be delivered as part of an Apprenticeships programme.

Year 1
- Anatomy, physiology and genetics
- Basic first aid
- Human first aid
- General veterinary nursing
- Basic animal management
- Basic hospital practice and elementary materia medica
Year 2
- Laboratory diagnostics aids
- Fluid management
- Medical nursing
- Diagnostic imaging
- Surgical nursing – general
- Surgical nursing – theatre practice
- Anaesthesia
- Other species - exotics
Assessment
RCVS examinations and continuous practical assessments in the workplace to build a portfolio of evidence.
Additional Qualifications
If taken as part of the Apprenticeships scheme, our programme of study will also include Key Skills Level 2 and Emergency First Aid.

Entry Requirements:
You must be employed in a veterinary practice that is an approved training practice. In addition, one of the following is required:-
- Five GCSE passes at grade C or above include Maths, English Language and/or Science
- Animal Nursing Assistant qualification
- BTEC National Diploma (discretion of the RCVS)
Typical Employment:
veterinary nursing, work with animal sanctuaries, pet shops, police, RSPCA inspector, animal technician, Blue Cross or PDSA.
