Level 3 Subsidiary/Extended Diploma in Animal Management

Handling the animalsThis course is suited to both school leavers and mature students who have a genuine interest in animal welfare and management. It is based on lectures, practical duties and work experience and is equivalent to 3 A levels.

It is ideal if you are intending to work within the animal industry and want to learn more about the wider concepts relating to the management of animals, as well as their biology. The course is also well recognised if you wish to progress to an animal related higher education qualification, or go into employment in this sector.

Course Contents

Units covered may include:

  • Understand and promote animal health
  • Manage animal accommodation
  • Understand animal anatomy and physiology
  • Plan and monitor animal feeding
  • Understand the principles of animal biology
  • Undertake animal handling and safe working
  • Undertake and review work related experience in the landbased industries
  • Undertake an Investigative project in the land-based sector
  • Business management in the land-based sector
  • Understand and Interpret animal behaviour and communication
  • Understand the principles of animal nursing
  • Understand animal welfare and breed development
  • Undertake dog grooming
  • Understand the principles and carry out the practice of exotic animal health and husbandry

Additional qualifications

Your programme of study will include a First Aid Certificate

Functional Skills

All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous with assignments, projects and practical work. It also includes 300 hours of work experience over the duration of the course. You must also attend college on a rota basis to complete animal unit duties.

Entry Requirements:
4 GCSE passes at grade C or above (including maths, science and English)/Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care (distinction grade). Places will be offered subject to interview and initial assessments.

Typical Employment:
Successful completion of the course can lead to employment in any of the following sectors: pet shops, kennels and catteries/sanctuaries, nutrition, vet nursing training, technician, conservation, zoo/wildlife parks, wildlife and ecology.

Further Study:
Level 4 Diploma, Degree level courses, or alternatively enter employment and continue training on a part time basis
