BTEC National Award in Blacksmithing & Metalwork - Level 3
This is a one year programme of study which, upon successful certified completion, can lead on to a second year of study, leading to a National Diploma in Blacksmithing and Metalwork.
A genuine motivation and commitment to the craft is a requirement and in the absence of foundation qualifications, previous experience of forgework or related metalwork disciplines is an expectation. The potential applicant is strongly advised to produce a portfolio of previous work for interview.
A full range of skills are covered:
- Blacksmithing – forging skills including production of set and individually designed pieces
- Fitting – use of hand tools, basic bench work
- Cutting and welding – MIG, ARC and Gas
- Fabrication Drawing – Producing accurate workshop drawing/surface developments
- Metal Fabrication – creation of pieces from sheet metal
- Art and Design – Production of detailed designs for Blacksmithing
Work experience is included in the course with students attending for 3 weeks with a practicing Smith.

During the course there will be an opportunity to work towards BTEC National Certificate units with potential progression onto a second year BTEC National Certificate/Diploma.

Entry Requirements:
5 GCSE's at Grade C or above to include English and Maths or a relevant Level 2 qualification eg. First Diploma in Blacksmithing and Metalwork, previous relevant experience, interview, initial assessments.
