Higher Diploma in Business Administration & Finance
This course offers an insight into the world of business. It is a level 2 qualification (equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades A - C) and will enable you to progress to an advanced level course or appropriate employment – in the space of one year.
If you are interested in a future in the business world or simply want to use this as a stepping stone to another area then this course could be for you!
The emphasis of the course is on “learning by doing” which involves assessment by projects, case studies and assignments. Local visits and work experience will also be included.
The Higher Diploma is designed to help learners develop key areas, including interpersonal skills and customer service. Learners have the opportunity to develop skills to support them as they build relationships with a wide variety of customers, internal and external, to a range of business environments. Specialist areas also include:
- Finance, both personal and business, together with bookkeeping, which supports development of basic financial principles
- Working in business teams and team leading
- Business support or administration, which supports development of practical administration skills including offi ce systems and equipment, meeting support and filing systems
- Personal selling, which helps learners to understand the personal selling process
- Aspects of business on-line and how this can support businesses to develop opportunities
- Enterprise and business start-up
All of the above is supported by learners’ involvement in ‘Young Enterprise’ enabling learners to learn by experiencing the running of a business and to participate in trade fairs and competitions.
Learners will also take an additional specialist qualification during their course to enhance learning. Last year’s specialist qualification was the BTEC Certificate in Employability Skills.
Functional Skills:
All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.
Assessment Methods:
Learners receive feedback on their progress throughout the course as they provide evidence towards the grading criteria. Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of diverse activities including assignment and project work, case studies, workplace assessment, role play and oral presentation.
Progression Route:
The higher diploma provides a route to employment into the many diverse areas of business.
These could include roles in specialist areas such as marketing, finance, customer service or human resources in large organisations or a more generic role in a small local business. Learners wishing to continue studying might like to progress to: Level 3 courses e.g. Business Subsidiary/Extended Diploma, AAT Accounting or an apprenticeship.
