Level 3 Subsidiary/Extended Diploma

Surveying a construction siteThe Construction and the Built Environment Diploma is an innovative new employerendorsed qualifi cation that introduces young people to the nature of the built environment and its impact on both individuals and communities.

You will research and observe how building techniques and principles have evolved over the centuries and how scientific and physical principles are involved within construction practices. You will study the method of tendering for work, the design and administration of construction projects and the measurement and costing of work operations to ensure the project is completed on time and within budget. You will also be involved in practical surveying, levelling, producing and working with architects’ plans utilising the latest CAD technology.

The course is delivered using a mixture of teaching methods including lectures, demonstrations, assignments and site visits that will enhance the learning experience.

Assessment is continuous with assignments, projects and practical work and a range of assessment methods are used which include written tasks, group and individual presentations.

There are 6 core units and a selection of specialist units:

  • Sustainable construction
  • Construction technology and
    design
  • Science and materials in
    construction
  • Mathematics in construction
  • Building technology

Specialist Units (may include):

  • Surveying in construction
  • Graphical detailing
  • Planning procedures
  • Property law
  • Measuring, estimating and tendering processes
  • Computer aided drafting and design for construction
  • Building surveying
  • Project management
  • Structural mechanics in construction and civil engineering

Functional Skills

All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.

At least 4 GCSEs at grades A to C including maths, science and English, or equivalent. Places will be offered subject to a successful interview and diagnostic test.

Typical Employment:
Trainee Surveyor, Architect or Site Manager, or a Technician working with one of these.

Further Study:
Progression to HNC / HND or degree courses.
