Level 3 Subsidiary/Extended Diploma in Countryside Management (including elements of Forestry and Gamekeeping)

Felling a large tree by chainsawThis qualification prepares learners for employment in the countryside management sector and suits both school leavers who have decided that they wish to enter this area of work as well as mature learners.

The course reflects the need for competent, trained countryside managers to work in an exciting and rewarding industry. It provides the knowledge, understanding and skills for students wishing to enter careers dealing with policy and planning associated with Countryside organisations and their relationship with other similar organisations and local authorities, e.g. Natural England, RSPB, local councils. It also may provide progression to higher education vocational qualifi cations such as Level 4 Diplomas or degree level courses.

This course is based on lectures, practical duties and work experience and is equivalent to three A Levels. You will gain experience in a range of countryside management based activities, including practical skills development and countryside management.

Units may include:

  • Undertake and review work related experience in the landbased industries
  • Understand the principles and carry out the practice of wildlife population
  • Surveys, ecology and conservation
  • Undertake estate skills
  • Undertake an investigative project in the land-based sector
  • Undertaking vertebrate pest and predator control
  • Undertaking woodland habitat management
  • Undertaking farm habitat management
  • Understand and carry out tree and shrub planting, aftercare and protection for forestry and arboriculture
  • Understand deer management
  • Understanding the principles of game management
  • Business management in the land-based sector
  • Undertaking land-based machinery operation
  • Understand the principles of plant science
  • Understand the principles of soil science
  • Understand the principles of tree felling and chainsaw use
  • Understanding woodland management
  • Understanding principles of forest recreation
  • Understanding freshwater and wetland management
  • Undertaking urban habitat conservation

Additional qualifications

Your programme of study will include a Certificate of Competence.

Functional Skills

All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous with assignments, projects and practical work and includes 300 hours of work experience over the duration of the course.

Further Study:
Level 4 Diploma, Degree level courses, or enter employment and continue training on a part time basis.
