Foundation Electrical Installations

Electrician at workThis course provides the first step toward qualified Electrician status and combines studies toward the City & Guilds Technical Certificates with a foundation grounding in electrical principles and safe working practises. Successful completion of the course must include Functional Skills. It can then lead to an apprenticeship (if suitable employment can be found) or further full-time study.  The underpinning knowledge gained from studying this course will enable progression into installation work or associated electrical / electronic services.

As an Electrician you would need to be fit, have good colour vision, have a head for heights and be prepared to travel. It is a job for people with a discerning mind, where the safety of yourself and others demands attention to detail.

We have established strong links with local industries, many employers being successful exstudents. With the co-operation of a wide range of employers in the industry, a period of time is set aside during the year to allow for work experience, though this is dependent on availability.

The course offers a valuable opportunity for school-leavers and adults with an interest in electricity to study installation work on a full-time basis, in preparation for work-based training. A day-release route based upon a selective interview, suitable apprenticeship or work placement would be the normal progression from the first year. However, full-time study through the second year is available and can equally lead to placement and subsequent completion of the NVQ 3 required to gain registered electrician status.

Subjects covered include:

  • Preparation for work
  • Electrical principles
  • Wiring systems
  • IEE regulations
  • Electrical technology
  • Electrical practice
  • Health and safety at work
  • Industrial studies

The learner will gain a wide range of skills, providing good career opportunities in the electrical industry where many employers demand a degree of multi-skilled ability.

Employment could be considered in the following areas: general manufacturing / maintenance, electrical contracting, food and drink industries (electrical plant maintenance) and the major utilities.

Functional Skills

All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.
