Engineering:
Level 3 Subsidiary/Extended Diploma
From intricate electronic devices capable of reading CDs, to the massive structure of North Sea oilrigs, the skills and expertise of Engineers have never been more evident or more widely sought after. Herefordshire is home to a variety of technological activities such as food processing, metal and plastic forming, vehicle component manufacture and scientific instrument making.
Viewed nationally, a vast number of industrial and commercial ventures rely heavily on engineering skills and expertise.
The Subsidiary Diploma is a one-year full-time qualification consisting of six units (equivalent to one A level). Successful completion of the Subsidiary Diploma allows entry to the Extended Diploma (equivalent to 3 A levels) to be completed.
This course will broaden your horizons and future options. Upon successful completion, you may decide to apply for a degree course in various disciplines including; engineering, business, sociology, design, IT or architecture or enter the world of work. All the skills acquired by diploma learners are relevant to the modern day workplace.
Course Content:
Skills studied include:
- Lathes and milling machines
- Fitting
- Electronic test equipment
- Computer Aided Drawing
- Engineering related computer software
However, since engineering technicians are involved in such activities as design, quality control, equipment maintenance and plant installation, they need sound theoretical understanding and communication skills too. To reflect this the course mixes theory and practice.
Subjects covered include:
- Materials
- Mechanical and electrical principles
- Mathematics
- Computer Aided Design
- Electronics
- Engineering science
- Functional skills
- Fluid mechanics
- Communications
- Health and safety
- Engineering project
Learners will undertake focused engineering tasks and solve engineering problems that develop skills, knowledge and understanding in relation to engineering materials, equipment and technology. Maths and Science form a signifi cant part of the course, the advantage being that students learn how to apply these to engineering.
Functional Skills
All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.
