Equine Studies - Level 1 Diploma
This course is suitable for young people who want to work outside with horses but will also give you an excellent introduction in all areas of land based studies including plants and machinery. The course provides an ideal introduction to a range of land based industries enabling you to make an informed choice of further education or career progression, although you will specialise in the subject area of horses.
This Level 1 Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs grade D-G and is made up of eight units: Students will be required to study three core units, two personal skills units and three option units.
Core units:
- Safe and effective working practices in land-based industries
- Develop performance in land-based industries
- Industrial experience in land-based industries
- Assist with the preparation for exercise and aftercare of horses
Specialist units include:
- Assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals
- Assist with the movement, handling and accommodation of animals
- Assist with feeding and watering animals
- Maintain the health of horses
- Exercise horses under supervision
Additional qualifications
Your programme of study will include Basic/Functional Skills and a First Aid qualification.
Assessment
Each unit will be assessed by a combination of assignments, class exercises, practical assessments and end of unit assessments. There is also an on-line test.

Entry Requirements:
2 GCSE passes at grade E or above (preferably in English and Maths). Students must demonstrate a willingness to learn and an interest in animals, plants and the countryside

Students can progress to a Level 2 Diploma qualifi cation in the same / a similar vocational area
