BTEC National Diploma in Horse Management

The Indoor ArenaThe course provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers key knowledge and practical skills required in the Equine Industry. The course is equivalent to three A levels. However, there are opportunities to study the equivalent of one or two A levels – depending on the number of units studied.

We aim to provide the best possible vocational experience for the equine students. All full time equine learners participate in equine yard duties throughout the year alongside their main programme of study. It is therefore crucial that you are a compassionate, dedicated and committed person. A rota is put in place and it will include some weekends. We do provide collection and drop off facilities at weekends at Hereford bus / train station but students will be responsible for sorting out their own transport provision to and from Hereford itself at weekends.

The course will introduce students to a range of horse management settings. It gradually progresses to extend their experience of work and knowledge of the Equine Industry. Assessment criteria is taught through practical and theoretical lectures, practical duties and work experience. You will gain experience in a range of equine based activities, through theory work and work experience. As well as the broad themes of science, equine skills and business management, the courses will also enable the student to develop supervisory and other management skills.

  • Investigative project in the horse sector
  • Animal anatomy and physiology
  • Horse behaviour and stud practices
  • Horse fitness and training
  • Competition grooming
  • Practical equitation
  • Theory of equitation
  • Riding and training horses on the flat
  • Riding horses over fences (optional)
  • Equestrian teaching
  • Land based industries customer care and retail service
  • Business management for land based industries
  • Land based estate construction, repair and maintenance skills (optional)
  • Horse nutrition

Additional Qualifications

Your programme of study will include Key Skills numeracy and literacy and work experience on the campus indoor and outdoor menages. Although students will gain work experience throughout the week, some will take place at weekends as the yard is a live working environment.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous.  A range of assessment methods are used including written tasks, group and individual presentations, reports, video analysis and practical skill observations.  All units are assessed, graded and internally verified.  A sample of units is then externally verified.  An overall grade for the qualification is then awarded according to the accumulative score of all units achieved.

First Certificate (at Merit or Distinction) supported by at least two GCSEs at C and above which should include Maths and English. All of the following should also be supported by Maths and English GCSE's at C and above or equivalent: First Diploma in a related subject (at Merit or Distinction) / Apprenticeship / Minimum Four GCSEs at grades A to C
/ NVQ level 2 in an equine subject or equivalent qualification. Places will be offered subject to a successful interview.

Typical Employment:
Successful completion of the course can lead to employment as a groom, assistant yard manager or work in a riding school, stud farm assistant, livery yard assistant manager, mounted armed forces or working in animal welfare organisations.

Further Study:
The Higher National Diploma, Degree level courses or alternatively enter employment and continue training on a part time basis.
