Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management
The course provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers key knowledge and practical skills required for a successful career in this amazing industry.
We aim to provide the best possible vocational experience for our equine learners. All full-time learners participate in yard duties throughout the year alongside their main programme of study. A rota is put in place and it will include some weekends. We do provide collection and drop-off facilities at weekends at Hereford bus/train station but learners will be responsible for arranging their own transport provision to and from Hereford at weekends. The course will introduce learners to a range of horse management settings.
Course Contents
Core units may include:
- Understand and promote animal health
- Select, fit and evaluate horse tack and equipment
- Plan and monitor animal feeding
- Prepare horses for presentation
- Understand the principles of animal biology
- Understand animal anatomy and physiology
Optional Units may include:
- Riding horses on the flat
- Riding horses over fences
- Undertake an investigative project in the land-based industry
- Contribute to managing an equine event
- Undertake equestrian teaching
- Introduction to the principles of young horse handling, training and backing
- Understand the principles of an equine stud
- Understand the principles of horse rehabilitation and therapy
- Understand the principles of equitation
Functional Skills
All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.
Assessment
Assessment is continuous with assignments, projects and practical work and includes 300 hours of work experience over the duration of the course.
A range of assessment methods are used including written tasks, group and individual presentations, reports, video analysis and practical skill observations.

Entry Requirements:
Level 2 Diploma (at Merit or Distinction); Level 2 Apprenticeship; NVQ level 2 in an equine subject or equivalent qualification;
All of the above should also be supported by Maths and English GCSEs at C and above or equivalent. Places will be offered subject to a successful interview.
Typical Employment:
Successful completion of the course can lead to employment as a groom, assistant yard manager or work in a riding school, stud farm assistant, livery yard assistant manager, polo yards, mounted armed forces or working in animal welfare organisations
Further Study:
Level 4 qualification in Equestrian Studies, Land and the Environment, Animal Care or into work-based learning through the Apprenticeship Scheme
