Level 3 Extended Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture
This course is based on lectures, practical duties and work experience and is equivalent to three A levels. You will gain experience in a range of forestry / arboriculture based activities, including practical skills development and forest business management.
Units include:
- Understand the principles of plant science
- Understand the principles of soil science
- Understand and carry out tree and shrub planting, aftercare and protection for forestry and arboriculture
- Understanding woodland management
- Measure trees and carry out woodland sampling
- Understand the principles and identify the signs of pests and diseases of trees
- Undertake tree surveys and inspections and analyse the data
- Understanding principles of forest recreation
- Operate, maintain and understand the principles of specialist forestry and arboricultural machinery
- Maintain and understand equipment used for timber conversion and utilisation
- Undertaking woodland habitat management
- Business management in the land-based sector
- Undertake estate skills
Additional qualifications and Functional Skills
Your programme of study will include Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Mathematics and a range of Certifi cates of Competence.
Assessment
Assessment is continuous with assignments, projects and practical work and includes 300 hours of work experience over the duration of the course.

Entry Requirements:
Four GCSE passes at C or above (including Maths and English.)
Either a Level 2 Diploma (minimum Merit grade) / National Certifi cate (minimum Merit grade) / NVQ Level 2 in a Forestry related subject or equivalent qualifi cations. Places will be offered subject to a successful interview
Typical Employment:
Forestry industry, self employed, public sector – local and district councils, Forest Enterprise, Environment Agency, working for organisations concerned with managing the natural environment eg, Natural England, Wildlife Trusts, National Trusts.
Further Study:
Level 4 Diploma, Degree level courses, or enter employment and continue training on a part time basis.
