What will I be learning on the Furniture Studies Course?
The programme of study follows the City & Guilds 5680 Diploma in Furniture Design and Making Levels 2 and 3. The course uses theory sessions but the main emphasis is on learning by doing.
In the first year you will produce hand-made furniture with the aid of machines, on which you will be given thorough training. The planning, preparation, jointing and finishing of furniture will also be included in the course. You will gain and appreciation of the development of furniture styles, materials and manufacture through studying the history of furniture. In the second year you will be designing and making your own furniture and can make full use of the workshop and machinery facilities. Technical and presentation drawing skills are developed. You will look at modern manufacturing practice and be taught how to estimate costs.
Interviews for places on the course are held in the spring and summer terms. In addition to meeting the entry requirements listed in the Key Facts you will be expected to demonstrate a real interest in furniture making. If possible you should bring examples of your own craftwork and drawings to the interview.
Applicants who do not gain a place on the year 1 programme will be advised to apply for the Introduction to Construction course.
