GCSE Introduction
The College offers the opportunity to take a full GCSE programme or dip in to an individual GCSE, according to your needs. The classes are made up from a range of different age groups and the atmosphere is both adult and friendly.
Fast-track GCSEs
Whether you are trying again for a GCSE you didn’t achieve at school, or whether you are taking a GCSE for the first time, you will be able to study the course in one year.
Added Extras
You will have the opportunity to gain Key Skills qualifications at an appropriate level. You will also be allocated a Personal Tutor who will support you throughout your studies. If you are applying to university, you will be assisted with the application process, from filling in the form to applying for your student loan.
English GCSE
GCSE English is one of the most important qualifications you can gain. The course will require you to write in many different ways for a wide variety of people and purposes. You will also be involved in discussions with different groups of people. You may find yourself debating, giving a talk, acting out a part in a play or making a radio programme. You will also continue to read in a critical way. At the end of the course, your level of attainment in English will be assessed through a mixture of coursework (written and spoken) and written examinations.
Human Physiology and Health GCSE
This subject covers the Anatomy and Physiology of Man, Genetics, Health and Hygiene, Biotechnology and Man’s Effects on the Environment. Contemporary issues are discussed throughout the course, from diet and circulatory disorders, to birth control and biological washing powders. There are lots of opportunities for practical work. The coursework is a scientific investigation involving you designing and carrying out your own experiments.
Mathematics GCSE
GCSE Mathematics at Grade C or above is a requirement of nearly all further education courses and most employers’ look for GCSE Maths and English on CVs. Many mature students who “hated maths” at school have found, to their delight, that their experience of life and the real world has enabled them to cope with this GCSE.
Psychology GCSE
Psychology is the study of people, why they do things and how they do them. Studying this GCSE could lead you on to A-Level studies and eventually to university. The course is taught using a variety of methods, including classroom lectures, visual aids, handouts and videos. Regular discussions take place and are encouraged, and there are also many practical’s and experiments.
GCSE Communication and Information Technology
Knowledge of communication and information technology is an essential skill for most chosen careers these days. This GCSE covers the use of software, hardware, IT systems and problem solving. You will be required to produce one major piece of course work which will contribute to 60% of you marks, the remaining 40% will be examinable. HCT has extensive up to date hardware and software, which, with experienced tutors, will enable you to gain another valuable GCSE in your portfolio.
GCSE Statistics
A knowledge and understanding of statistics is a valuable tool for many jobs and for many other qualifications e.g. biology. This course will enable you to calculate and interpret data so that you make an informed decision on a wide range of issues. Statistics enables you to apply mathematical knowledge to real situations.
