Hairdressing:
NVQ Levels 1, 2 and 3
For those who enjoy meeting and dealing with people and who have a confident and outgoing personality, studying hairdressing at HCT is an excellent choice. The industry is diverse and career opportunities exist locally, nationally and internationally. Our industry-standard salons are fun, funky and open to the public. You should have bags of dedication, common sense, self-motivation and artistic flair.
We currently offer NVQ Certificate/ Diploma from Level 1 to 3. These courses give the skills necessary to establish a career in a wide variety of settings, including: salons, cruise ships and freelance opportunities. All of our courses combine theory with practical-based learning.
Hairdressing
Level 1 Certificate
This qualification is for a Hairdressing Assistant providing support for the Stylist. The areas of study include 2 qualifications in:
- Hairdressing & Barbering
- Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector
When completed, you may be able to progress onto Levels 2 and 3.
Hairdressing
Level 2 Certificate
If you successfully complete Level 2, you will have gained all the basic technical hairdressing skills to become a competent junior stylist.
During practical sessions, you will learn how to:
- Shampoo and condition hair
- Cut hair
- Style and finish hair – including long hair put ups
- Change hair colour
- Nail art application
- Basic make-up application
Hairdressing
Level 3 Diploma
This course is intended for hairstylist and technicians already qualified to the standard of NVQ Level 2 and is suitable for those wishing to further their technical skills in hairdressing. At Level 3 you may choose modules to meet with your own particular needs and aspirations.
Level 3 is an intensive course which places high demands on the individual with regard to the level of self motivation, dedication and enthusiasm due to self directed study.
At Level 3 you could choose to:
- Dress long hair – including creative styling
- Add hair extensions
- Develop skills in colour correction
- Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
During your course you will be continuously assessed and be required to build up a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your professionalism. This course will also help you develop your communication and numeracy skills which are vital in employment.
Functional Skills
All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.

It is recommended that you have GCSE passes in English, maths, science and another arts subject
