Medical Reception (AMSPAR)
Intermediate Diploma
The AMSPAR/City and Guilds programme is ideal for anyone interested in working in the health service. With an astounding achievement rate and highly regarded in the health sector, this may be the course for you!
This extremely popular programme continues to be successful, both in terms of learners gaining the award and also in gaining relevant employment. We are also proud of the fact that many of our learners gain a distinction or credit.
The course is aimed at anyone aged over 16 years who is interested in working in any section of the health service in an administrative role. This might range from doctors’ surgeries, to hospitals - working as ward clerks, administrators and secretaries.
The typical learner is a mature individual who is looking for a new career or planning to return to work. In the past learners have come from a wide variety of employment backgrounds and their ages range from 16 to 50+ years.
The content of this course is wide ranging and practical. The emphasis of the course is placed on the role of the receptionist and their dealings with the public.
This role requires a sound knowledge of office procedures and clerical duties. An appreciation of medical terminology and health education is also necessary. Word processing, audio transcription and text processing are all part of the programme.
Work experience is an integral part of the course to achieve the diploma. This provides the opportunity to put the skills learned in to practice and could include spending time in a doctors’ surgery or in different departments of the Acute Hospital NHS Trust.
This qualification is highly recognised in the health sector and the calibre of training at HCT is such that many employers not only approach us first when job vacancies arise, but also ask us to deliver many short ‘refresher’ courses for their staff.
Assessment is by internal and external assessment methods.
Functional Skills
All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.
