Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horticulture
This course is based on an integration of theoretical and practical lectures backed up by work experience and is equivalent to three A Levels. You will gain experience in a range of Horticultural based activities through work in the college gardens and work experience. It will allow you to either progress to higher education courses or move into employment.
Units include:
- Understand the principles of plant science
- Undertake and review work related experience in the land-based industries
- Undertake an investigative project in the land-based sector
- Business management in the land-based sector
- Undertaking land-based machinery operation
- Participate in business planning and improvement in the land-based sector
- Undertake estate skills
- Manage plant propagation activities
- Understand the principles of plant health and protection
- Construct and maintain decorative landscape features
- Undertake identification, selection and use of ornamental plants
- Undertake site surveying, levelling and setting out
- Construct horizontal landscape surfaces
- Construct and maintain timber landscape features
- Understand the principles and practices of landscape and garden design
Additional qualifications and Functional Skills
Your programme of study will include Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Mathematics and a range of Certificates of Competence.
Assessment
Assessment is continuous with assignments, projects and practical work and includes 300 hours of work experience over the duration of the course.

Four GCSEs grade C or above (including Maths and English) or a First Diploma at merit or a National Certificate at credit or an NVQ Level 2. Places will be offered subject to a successful interview
