Level 1 and 2 Diploma

BMW engineThere is an ever-increasing number of vehicles on our roads with ever-increasing levels of technological complexity. As a result, there is always a need for qualified craftspeople, technicians and truly professional motor vehicle engineers.

Employment in the Motor Vehicle Industry covers a wide range of activities including; maintenance and servicing of motor cycles, vans and heavy goods vehicles, storage, handling and selling of vehicle spares and accessories, vehicle sales and leasing and the management of retail and fleet operations.

Entry requirements focus on the motivation of applicants. You will be required to show a keen interest in the Road Transport Industry. A good general education with Grade D or above at GCSE, including at least one subject with a science or technology bias, is desired.

Work experience (where available) with a local company is another feature of this course, which ensures that learners have insight into what work in the industry will involve.

Qualification

City & Guilds 4290-11 VRQ (Vocationally Recognised Qualification) Level 1, Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance. Applicants that do not gain a place on year 1 programmes will be advised to apply for the Introduction to Engineering course.

Course Content

Units covered may include:

  • Carry out basic routine vehicle maintenance
  • Introduction to vehicle technology and workshop methods and processes
  • Skills in health, safety and good housekeeping in the automotive environment
  • Skills to support working relationships in the automotive work environment
  • Skills in removing and replacing light vehicle engine units and components

 

Upon successful completion of this Level 1 Diploma, progression is available on to Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles Level 2 Diploma. This is a full-time course or a workbased apprenticeship, aiming toward NVQ/VCQ 2 or 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Competence.

Course Content

Units for Level 2 may include:

  • Skills in removing and replacing light vehicle chassis units and components
  • Skills in overhauling light vehicle engine units
  • Skills in inspecting light vehicles using prescribed methods
  • Skills to identify and agree motor vehicle customer needs
  • Skills in removing and replacing light vehicle driveline units and components

Functional Skills

All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.
