Music/Sound Technology:
BTEC Subsidiary/Extended Diploma, Level 3
The Subsidiary Diploma is a 1 year full-time qualification consisting of 6 units. Successful completion of the Subsidiary Diploma allows entry to the second “top-up” year which will enable an Extended Diploma to be completed. This provides learners with a qualification that equal 3 A levels.
This course takes an in-depth look at audio industry-related vocations. It will be of interest to both school leavers and mature learners who are interested in live audio engineering and studio production, and who would like to prepare for a higher education qualification in this exciting field.
You will complete a number of projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.
Course Content
This course highlights some of the following subject areas:
Operating Live Sound
You will be introduced to the rigging and operation of audio technology equipment as used in live performance. From this you will build your own live rigs for various performances that take place throughout your time on the course.
Recording a Music Product
This subject is concerned with the preparation, setting up and management of recording sessions. You will gain skills in all aspects of recording in the studio and on outside locations. Having been involved in the recording of various projects you will also learn how to master your recording into a final product. E.g. CD – MP3 – Internet.
Music Sequencing
Students are provided with the necessary skills and understanding that musicians, recording engineers and music producers require in operating the kind of music sequencing software which has become so important in the contemporary music industry.

Functional Skills
All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.

Teaching and Assessment
Formal lectures and informal group work are supplemented by workshop sessions with strong practical content. Assessment is by assignments which are marked as pass, merit or distinction.
