Public services students

Who is this course for?

School leavers and learners over the age of 19 who are interested in a career in the public services (e.g. Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Police, Fire Service or Ambulance Service), though may not have the experience required to enter the services.

Learners who enjoy a mixture of theory and practical experiential learning will greatly benefit from the teaching styles used on this course.

Course Aims

  • To prepare you for entry into a public service organisation
  • To enable you to recognise and work towards gaining the skills and abilities which enhance promotion and career prospects within the public services

Course Content

The course is made up of three core units and three specialist units, which include both practical and theory sessions:

  • Public service skills
  • Adventurous activities
  • Sport and recreation for public services
  • Career planning and employment
  • Land and navigation by map and compass

What do these units include?

You will study public service skills, physical fitness, teamwork, map reading and navigation and employment opportunities within the uniformed services.

A residential component is also included as well as extra-curricular activities including climbing, ropes work, caving, kayaking, hill walking, team building and a variety of service exercise drills. All of the activities promote the ability for all learners to be employable in the services and for them to serve in a society which consists of multiple ages, faiths, races, lifestyles, needs, abilities, beliefs, opinions, genders and sexual orientation.

You will also visit a variety of emergency service operation centres and undertake a number of residential courses, which may include:

  • 2 day team-building induction in the Brecon Beacons
  • 1 week expedition in the Scottish Highlands
  • 3 day ‘Look at the Royal Marines’
  • 2 day London visit
  • Various other day trips to: prison training college, RTC hands-on event, soldier careers fair and sporting events amongst many others

Functional Skills

All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.
