Public Services - Level 3
Course Highlights
You will visit a variety of emergency service centres and undertake a number of practical activities, which may include:
- Radio and communication training
- Royal Marines visit to the College
- Climbing, caving, kayaking and hill walking
- A variety of service fitness and exercise drills
- Military unarmed combat/ physical intervention
- Conflict management through a series of role plays
- Sessions with the Hereford Territorial Army
- Expedition residential
Course Overview
This specialist course is designed to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for working within the uniformed public services.
The College works in close collaboration with the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services and the Armed Forces. Learners can prepare for a career in one of these areas drawing from the experiences they have gained throughout the course. Learning is delivered by highly trained staff with career backgrounds in: Police, Magistrate Court, Social Work and Outdoor Education. We also have specialist guest speakers to complement subject areas.
Whether you choose to help keep the peace in Iraq or respond to a road traffic collision in Hereford, the one certainty is that each day will bring new challenges and rewards.
Qualification
Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Uniformed Public Services (equivalent to 1.5 A levels) Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services (equivalent to 3 A levels)

- Government and Policy
- Leadership and Teamwork
- Citizenship and Diversity
- Understanding Discipline
- Fitness Testing and Training
Specialist Units:
- Water Based Skills – Kayak and Canoe and Gorge Walking
- Communication Skills
- Career Planning
- Security Procedures
Assessment is continuous, with assignments, projects and practical work. This course includes an element of self-study.
Functional Skills
All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.
Entry Requirements
- 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above (including English)
- Or Distinction in Level 2 BTEC qualifications
- Successful interview, initial assessment and pre-interview tasks
- Taster-day attendance
- You will need to demonstrate an a professional attitude and enthusiasm for this subject area
Progression
Study options may include:
- HNC in Public Services (Starts Sept 2014)
- BSc (Hons) in Outdoor Adventure Leadership and Management
- Foundation Degrees and higher education in relevant subjects
