BTEC Subsidiary/Extended Diploma Level 3

Public Services students training with the Royal MarinesThis specialist course is designed to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for working with all sections of the community in employment within the uniformed public services.

The College works in close collaboration with the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services and the Armed Forces and these valuable contacts enable tutors to keep the course content up-to-date and relevant.

To achieve success in any of these services you must be flexible, a good team player and able to think and work independently.

Course Aims

This program will prepare you for entry into a public service organisation and will:

  • Enable you to recognise and work towards gaining the skills and abilities which enhance promotion and career prospects within the public services
  • Enable you to gain the skills for entry into higher education in a public service related field

Course Content:

The course is made up of core units and specialist units:

Core Units

  • Leadership and teamwork
  • Government and policies
  • Discipline in the public services
  • Fitness testing in the public services
  • Citizenship and diversity in the public services

Specialist Units

  • Physical preparation
  • Outdoor and adventurous activities
  • Skills for land based and water based outdoor activities
  • Nautical studies
  • Land navigation by map and compass
  • Custodial care
  • Crime and its effects
  • Law and the legal system
  • Personnel and human resources
  • Command and control

The course will help you to:

  • Develop an understanding of aspects of the uniformed service of your choice
  • Find employment in the uniformed service of your choice
  • Gain access to higher education
  • Develop skills necessary to study at degree level

You will also visit a variety of emergency service operation centres and undertake a number of residential courses, which may include:

  • 2 day team-building induction in the Brecon Beacons
  • 1 week expedition in the Scottish Highlands
  • 3 day ‘Look at the Royal Marines’
  • 2 day London trip
  • Various other day trips to: prison training college, RTC hands on event, soldier careers fair, sporting events amongst many others

4 GCSEs at grade C or above, to include English. Diploma Public Services, (or similar level 2 programme at PPMMDD profi le) Places offered subject to a successful interview and completion of a mini assignment

Typical Employment/Progression:
Royal Marines, nursing, RAF, Army, officer entry to services, university (public services, law and criminology, sociology and psychology), Fire Service, Police and prison service.

Further Study:
On completion of the Level 3 Diploma, learners can progress on to higher education
