Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport - Performance & Excellence (Football Academy)
This course aims to provide a sound academic and practical foundation to sport through the experience of an athlete. Herefordshire College of Technology runs a highly successful Football Academy which is directly linked with Cheltenham Town Football Club and is based at the Hereford Campus. Our team of staff are not only qualified lecturers but qualified Football Association coaches, one who has played professionally.
Football Academy
This course is based on lectures and practical skills development and is the equivalent to one, two or three A Levels – depending on the number of units studied. For examples of the units covered, see below.
On completion, for those who wish to continue studying, there is a clear progression route to higher education courses at university in; Sports studies, teaching, leisure management and other related areas.
Football academy’ learners play in the Midland Floodlit League and visit Cheltenham Town Football Club’s ground on a regular basis to play their Youth Academy. Matches are also played locally at the excellent facilities provided by Wellington Football Club.
In the last eight years, seven of our learners have accepted professional football contracts. This year, the latest player to achieve this has also won his Welsh Cap, playing for Wales under 19s in the European Championships .We also currently have two former learners playing in the Welsh Premier League and another former learner is head coach for Cheltenham Town under 10’s.
For those who are not able to access the academy team they will participate in the College football team, who also compete on a weekly basis. Both teams train at the outstanding facilities at Hereford City Sports Club.
Functional Skills
All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.
Assessment
Assessment is continuous with assignments, projects and practical work.
A range of assessment methods are used including written tasks, group and individual presentations, reports, video analysis and practical skill observations.

Entry Requirements:
Level 2 Diploma (at Merit or Distinction); Level 2 Apprenticeship; NVQ Level 2 in Sport and Leisure Studies or equivalent qualification;
Minimum Four GCSEs at grades A to C to include Maths and English, or equivalent. Places will be offered subject to a successful interview
