Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport - Development, Coaching & Fitness
This course aims to provide you with a sound academic and practical foundation in the area of sport development, coaching and fitness. This course is ideal for those who are interested in sport but who don’t compete at an elite level. It gives the student a broad overview of sport allowing a diversity of experience.
For those who want to start a career in coaching, fitness training, leisure centre management, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, sport psychology, sports development and management, lifestyle training or progress onto recreation management and related careers, then this is the ideal course for you.
There is a clear progression to continuing study with university courses in sports & health studies, teaching physical education, leisure management, sports development, coaching, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and other related areas.
Sport – Development, Coaching & Fitness
Level 3 Extended Diploma
This course is based on both lectures and practical skills development and is equivalent to three A Levels.
Core subjects:
- Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport
- The physiology of fitness
- Assessing risk in sport
- Fitness training and programming
- Sports coaching
- Sports development
- Fitness testing for sport and exercise
- Practical team sports
Specialist units may include:
- Practical individual sports
- Exercise, health and lifestyle
- Exercise for specific groups
- Instructing physical activity and exercise
- Sports facilities and operational management
- Physical education and the care of children and young people
- Laboratory and experimental methods in sport and exercise sciences
- Leadership in sport
- Organising sports events
Functional Skills
All full-time learners will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate level. These will be in maths, English and in some cases ICT. Attendance to these sessions is mandatory, please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website for more details.
Assessment
Assessment is continuous with assignments, projects and practical work.
A range of assessment methods are used including written tasks, group and individual presentations, reports, video analysis and practical skill observations.

Entry Requirements:
Higher Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure, Level 2 Diploma (at Merit or Distinction); Level 2 Apprenticeship; NVQ Level 2 in Sport and Leisure Studies or equivalent qualification;
Minimum Four GCSEs at grades A to C to include Maths and English or equivalent. Places will be offered subject to a successful interview
Typical Employment:
Leisure centre assistant, working for a local county council in sports development, coaching, personal training.
Further Study:
Level 4 qualification in a related subject, such as sports studies, sports science, sports development, leisure management, coaching management, lifestyle management, physiotherapy, occupational therapy or teacher training
