Introduction

Climbing in the French AlpsThis BSc programme provides the opportunities to develop skills and gain experience in leading and coaching adventurous water and land-based activities, better understand the scientifi c underpinnings of performance in an outdoor context and gain an increased awareness of adventurous outdoor activities from a business perspective. 

The course makes excellent use of venues locally such as the Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons, but students will also visit venues further afield such as North Wales, the Lake District, Scotland, the Peak District and the French Alps

Entry Requirements

Passes at A to C in four GCSE subjects plus:-

  • UCAS tariff 180 points (rising to 240 points from Sept 2011) from a minimum of 12 units with at least 40 points from a 6 unit award (or equivalent)
  • Accredited Key Skills at Level 3 can be counted towards the tariff total
  • A Criminal Records Bureau disclosure is required for this course
  • Short-listed applicants will be interviewed.

 
Other acceptable qualifications include:-

  • Pre 2002 qualifications (e.g. GNVQ, BTEC ND etc) / International Baccalaureate (24 points) / European Baccalaureate (65%) / Foundation Year Access course pass / Mature entry route

 
Mature students without formal qualifications, who have worked or have relevant experience in the outdoor leisure industry, are particularly welcome to apply.

The first two years of the course consist of sixteen mandatory modules. During these two years mountain walking and kayaking are studied in detail

The first year (level 4) offers a broad foundation of practical activities such as mountain walking, rock climbing, canoeing and kayaking; underpinning theory relating to the use of adventurous outdoor activities for personal development; anatomy, physiology and bio-mechanics relating to the activities undertaken; weather and climate, and safety management.

The second year (level 5) builds on level 4, incorporating environmental awareness, coaching analysis, physiology and psychology directly relating to adventurous outdoor activities, business management, research methods, work experience and the leadership of adventurous outdoor activities.

During the final year (level 6), students will complete four mandatory modules, including a critical review of expedition based leadership from both theoretical and practical work and an independent research project (double module) relating to an aspect of outdoor adventure of their choice. Students will also choose four optional modules to suit their interests.

International Semester

Students have the option in semester 2 of their second year of spending an exciting semester in Norway, studying outdoor adventure from a Norwegian perspective.

Assessment

Assessment takes place using a variety of methods: coursework assignments, practical activities, individual and group presentations, case studies, reports and examinations.  

Additional qualifications

A range of National governing body awards are available including WGL, ML training & assessment, SPA training & assessment and BCU coaching and star awards.  A variety of residential trips are also available for students to enhance their experience and technical skills including a winter skills week in Scotland and sport climbing and via ferrata in southern France.
