Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) Level 4/5
Course Content
This is a two year programme designed for intending and practising teacher/trainers in the Lifelong Learning Sector. DTLLS is a requirement for those with a full teaching role, performing all teaching-related activities and with full responsibility for their learners.
The programme aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for their own effective performance and professional development, enabling them to realise their own potential and that of their learners. Key themes of the programme include:
Year 1
- Inclusive learning in the Lifelong Learning Sector
- Identifying and supporting individual student need
- Learning about learning
- Theories of learning
- Planning, recording, assessing and managing effective learning
- Undertake an action learning assignment
- Widen existing teaching and learning experiences
- Undertaking evaluation and reflective practice
- Plan, prepare and undertake teaching practice observations in Year 1
Year 2
- Developing competency and knowledge gained in Year 1
- Lifelong Learning Sector: Political And Economic Perspectives
- Curriculum Design
- Action Research
- Plan, prepare and undertake 3 teaching practice observations in Year 1
Entry Requirements
Applicants are expected to possess the following qualifications on entry:
- Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) – see separate course information leaflet (integrated for those without this qualification)
- Level 3 qualification in their vocational area
- A minimum GCSE Grade D English and Mathematics or equivalent Level One qualifications
- All trainees must have GCSE Grade C and above, or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English to progress to Year 2 of the award
- Be computer literate
Applicants with other teaching qualifications may be exempt from some aspects of the programme and APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning) may apply.
Attendance
Monday and Wednesday 6 - 9 pm or Thursday 9 am – 4.00pm
Assessment Methods
The Diploma requires 150 hours of teaching practice, of which 8 hours will be observed. You will work with a subject mentor for part of this. You will also complete a Professional Development Portfolio. There are 5 assignments in Year 1 and 4 in Year 2
Progression Route
Employment in the Lifelong Learning Sector as a qualified teacher (QTLS) following Professional Formation. Additional specialist modules are available to meet continuing professional development (CPD) requirements.
