BTEC Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering

This Higher National Certificate qualification is designed to improve the career prospects of students who are working as Engineering Technicians and who wish to access more academic studies. A career in engineering offers the chance to work in industries as diverse as transport, domestic equipment, civil engineering, the computing industry, service industries, medicine - the career opportunities really are endless!

Entry Requirements

You should have one of the following: a BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in a related discipline, alternatively passes in 2 or 3 A-levels in relevant subjects, or completion of a City & Guilds vocational level three programme, or possession of various Armed Service course certificates. Consideration is given to mature students.

Course Content

The BTEC/Edexcel Higher National Certificate is primarily an academic, work related course and is made up of ten units. Some of the units are compulsory core units and there is a choice of specialist options.

The Core Units are as follows:

  • Engineering Science
  • Analytical methods for engineers
  • Mechanical principles or electrical and electric principles
  • Business management techniques
  • Project

Progression Opportunities

Successful completion of the two-year course enables the student to study for a Top Up Higher National Diploma or to apply to University to study for a degree. Alternatively, employment may be gained in a supervisory/technical capacity.
