Higher National Diploma (Top-up) in Engineering

The Higher National Diploma in Engineering is designed to improve the career prospects of students who are working as Engineering Technicians and who wish to access more academic studies and/or prepare for a supervisory role. Individual units may be studied by students involved with Continuous Professional Development.

Entry Requirements

You should have one of the following: A BTEC Higher National Certificate in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or possession of various Armed Service course certificates. Consideration is given to mature students.

Course Content

The BTEC/Edexcel Higher National Diploma (top up) is primarily an academic, work related course and is made up of six units that are studied after you have completed a Higher National Certificate. All of the units are options, but the course must contain the relevant mix of H1 and H2 units.

Suggested suitable units include:

  • Project management
  • Energy management
  • Plant technology
  • Quality assurance & management
  • Measurement & testing
  • Working with Individuals and teams 

Progression Opportunities

Successful completion of the course provides a valued and recognised Level 4 qualification on its own, or you can progress to University to study for a degree. The course is a significant base for progression to Incorporated Engineer status.
