Introduction

Computer hard driveThe Foundation Degree is a vocationally focussed higher education qualification which integrates academic and work based learning. It is intended to equip learners with the skills and knowledge relevant to their employment in the IT industry, so satisfying the needs of employees and employers. The focus is on software, communications, theory and practice in ICT. Students wishing to continue their studies will be able to top-up to an Honours degree at the University of Gloucestershire or another suitable institution.

Entry Requirements

Students will normally possess one A2 Level qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent, such as a BTEC National.  Mature students will be assessed on their relevant experience. All students will be admitted on their ability to benefit from study at this level and their intellectual capacity and motivation to succeed.

Course Content

Level I

  • Study and transferable skills
  • Systems analysis and database design
  • Information technology and data presentation
  • Networking fundamentals (CISCO)
  • The internet and world wide web

Level 2

  • Work-based learning
  • Customising applications
  • IT user support
  • Network implementation & protocols (CISCO)

Assessment

Assessment takes place using a variety of methods including: assignments, presentations, projects, tests and case studies. Many assessments will be based on the application of knowledge and skills obtained in the computer laboratory. All students will receive regular feedback on their work and progress from their Tutors.

A Personal Tutor will guide students in the creation and maintenance of their Personal Development Portfolios.

The qualification will be awarded to students passing all modules with a CAT score of 240. A Distinction will be awarded to students with outstanding achievements in Level 2.

Progression Opportunities

On completion of the Foundation Degree you may apply to join the third year of a relevant Honours Degree course at the University of Gloucestershire or another suitable institution. You will have achieved 240 CAT points.
