Apprenticeships at HCT

Apprenticeships logoIf you are looking at pursuing a career and gaining qualifications at the same time, then an apprenticeship could be for you. HCT has been guiding people through work-based training for over 20 years across a wide variety of occupations.

What are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships have been developed in conjunction with employers as a means of training and developing people in the career of their choice. They provide the foundation on which to develop a range of options for the future. They can also be used as a stepping-stone to further or higher education or university.

Apprenticeships operate at two levels:

  • Apprenticeships
  • Advanced Apprenticeships

Both consist of the following qualification framework.

  • A practical qualification at either Level 2 or Level 3
  • A theory based technical qualification at either Level 2 or Level 3
  • Literacy and numeracy qualifications at either Level 2 or Level 3
  • Additional qualifications as specified by the various industries

Features Include:

  • All apprentices must be employed
  • Nationally recognised qualifications and certification on completion of the Apprenticeship
  • A Business Development Officer, who will give guidance, support and provide continuity throughout the course
  • Improved career prospects and job security
  • A course which can be used as a stepping stone to college, university or other learning opportunities.

Functional Skills

As part of the apprenticeship framework Functional Skills at the appropriate level in maths, English and in some instances ICT, are compulsory. Please refer to the Functional Skills section of this website.

How will the training take place?

The majority of training will take place in the workplace.  Each apprentice will attend college either as day-release or sometimes as block release depending on the occupational area selected.  In some cases assessment will be by completing tasks in the workplace.  Some courses may run with the first year being full-time at college in order to better equip apprentices when they start in the workplace in the second year.  Currently this applies to Construction, Electrical Installation and Plumbing.  This could be subject to change.

Benefits to the Apprentice

The obvious benefit is the opportunity to earn while learning but, more importantly, an apprenticeship develops skills for a successful career.

Benefits to the Employer

Employers gain by being able to train people to meet the needs of the business.  Their enthusiasm can bring positive benefits to other members of staff and the knowledge they gain is frequently used to the benefit of the business.
