Entry Requirements

Candidates must have achieved the Award in Chainsaw and Related Operations CS30 before taking this course. This course covers the felling of small trees with a diameter of 200mm-380mm.

Course Content

  • Risk assessment and emergency procedures
  • Safety and maintenance review
  • Felling techniques of trees from 200 - 380mm diameter
  • Take down of trees with the aid of hand tools
  • Delimbing and snedding techniques
  • Conversion and presentation of timber

Assessment/Progression

Following the course, candidates will be assessed for NPTC Award in Felling Small Trees CS31. This is a practical assessment. Tests are organised separately by NPTC and can be taken at College or on your own site. Tests take place on a separate day, test date will be confirmed at the start of the course. Students can progress on to Award to Fell and Process Trees over 380mm diameter CS32 or on to Award to Operate a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness CS39. (to do the latter candidates must also hold the Award to Climb Trees and Perform Aerial Rescue(CS38)
