Emergency First Aider at Work
The HSE has launched the Emergency First Aider at Work to replace the Appointed Person first aid course and this is to be completed over one day. It will allow the attendee to gain an HSE accredited certificate in first aid and those trained will be recognised as ‘workplace first aiders’.
The course is suitable for all those working within lower risk environments and for workplaces with few staff.
All organisations as a minimum requirement must appoint a person to take charge of first aid arrangements including looking after first aid equipment and facilities and calling the emergency services when required. And there should be a suitably qualified person available to take control of all first aid arrangements at all times when people are at work.
The certificate will be valid for three years with the additional option of attending a short refresher course after 12 months as strongly recommended by the HSE.
By the end of the course the delegates will:
- Understand the role of the first aider including reference to the use of available equipment and the need for recording incidents and actions.
- Demonstrate how to administer first aid safely, promptly and effectively to a casualty who is unconscious and / or in seizure.
- Demonstrate how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation promptly and effectively.
- Demonstrate how to deal with a Stroke casualty
- Demonstrate how to deal with blood loss and shock
- Demonstrate how to deal with minor burns and scalds
- Demonstrate how to deal with avoiding cross-infection
