High Hopes for Amey Apprentices

From left to right: Simon Jones, Jeremy Spencer and Keith LloydTwo apprentices trained at Herefordshire College of Technology and employed by one of the UK’s leading public services provider Amey, were praised this week for the level of skills they’d developed during their apprenticeship framework.

Carpentry and Joinery Apprentice, Jeremy Spencer explains how well the experience has worked for him, “The courses at HCT are really good and the tutors are brilliant. I have had a great experience with Amey too and I am now employed by them full time as a carpenter and joiner.”

Keith Lloyd, Logistics Manager for Amey’s Hereford branch commented, “We’re very supportive of the apprenticeship scheme as it benefits us in so many ways. It enables us to train employees with the right level of skills for our wide-ranging services, most of which require specialist knowledge. As experienced trades-people retire it is vital that we have enough highly-skilled employees to take on their roles. It is also great to see how much existing staff gain from mentoring apprentices and seeing their trade reinvigorated with committed and passionate workers. We’ve had very positive relations with HCT throughout this process and are really pleased with the results of their training.”

Painting and Decorating Apprentice, Simon Jones was really pleased with finding a trade that suits him, “My dad and my granddad both worked in this industry so I have always been interested in it. I did try out some other trades but in the end this is what felt like the right one, I really like doing the work and then seeing the final product. The communication between the College and my workplace was really effective and that has helped a lot with my development.”

Stephen Symonds, Building Services Supervisor at Amey, described the two apprentices as, “A breath of fresh air. We’ve had a great experience with both Jeremy and Simon; it’s great to see them achieve their framework completion.” HCT Business Development Officer, Brian Rodgers, commented, “Both apprentices are perfect examples of how well effective communication and excellent training can benefit all those involved. We look forward to an exciting future with Amey and wish Simon and Jeremy the best with their employment.”
