First Aid for New Drivers course

Passers-by and students witnessed the scene of a staged accident on Monday 15th January at Herefordshire College of Technology’s Folly Lane Campus. This was part of a First Aid for New Drivers Course, running as a joint initiative by HCT and Herefordshire Council to help reduce road deaths involving young people. The course was delivered by a local company Anubis, who specialise in First Aid training and team building. The car accident wreck used in the demonstration was supplied by Saffron Garage of Bodenham. The mock-up had to be as realistic as possible for impact and to convey to students exactly what they might encounter at an accident scene. First Aid procedures were tailored specifically to meet the needs of the road accident victim and much consideration was given to potentially volatile and dangerous roadside situations.

Ann Mann, Road Safety Officer for Herefordshire Council said, “We are always trying to raise road safety issues with new and young drivers with the aim of reducing the number of road casualties involving this group. It is also important that should they be involved in a collision and were able to offer first aid that they would know how to administer it safely and correctly.” In addition 600 Road Safety packs from the Council are going to be available for all full time students, they include a highway code and other important information for new and old drivers! Pass Plus is being subsidised by the Council and is for new drivers who have passed their test in the last 12 months. HCT is doing all it can to offer its students much needed courses and support in order to try to keep them safe on the roads!
