Outdoor Adventure Students Equal to the Challenge

Outdoor Education students braving blizzard conditionsThird year students from the BSc Outdoor Adventure Leadership & Management course were in the Lake District from October 31st - November 4th.

Working in small teams and supported by HCT staff Lee Pritchard and Joby Davis, the students encountered sub zero temperatures, snow storms and occasional periods of sunshine whilst carrying out their 5 day expeditions.  Students combined walking, canoeing and mountain biking to complete self sufficient journeys of up to 90 km in length, taking in a number of the Lake Districts high peaks and crossing a number of lakes.

CanoeingThe expeditions form part of the assessment for the Expedition Studies module that all OALM students are required to complete in their third year.

Course Leader Lee Pritchard and Lecturer Joby Davis were both of the opinion that the trip had been a great success, both as an expedition in it's own right and as a basis for study on leadership and team development which is the ultimate aim of the trip.  Students had a superb opportunity to study differing approaches to group leadership in a very real context, with decisions made having real consequences.  Feedback received from the students regarding the trip has all been extremely positive.
