Outdoor Adventure students brave the elements
A small group of students from the Holme Lacy campus, studying for the BSc (Hons) Degree in Outdoor Adventure Leadership and Management, travelled to the Cairngorms for a week long winter skills course. Accompanied by two members of staff, Joby Davis and Lee Pritchard, the Winter Skills Course was as an optional extra for their programme of study. Most of the week was spent in Coire an t-Sneachda, where the students were instructed in winter climbing skills. The training involved a number of the classic gully climbs, such as Jacobs Ladder, Aladins Couloir and The Runnel. The students also spent a day at the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven, Europe's largest indoor ice climbing facility, where they experienced steep ice and worked on their ice climbing technique.
The weather for the week was extremely challenging, with strong winds, sub-zero temperatures and fresh snow falling on most days. Nevertheless, the students braved the elements and the course proved to be a great success, equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge for venturing out in winter conditions.
