College STAR sets Shining Example!
Learning Support tutor Jean Bartley has been nominated for a prestigious STAR award by The Learning and Skills Improvement Service. The service holds the annual STAR Awards to recognise and reward individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the quality of learning that millions of people across England receive every day.
Jean made the final shortlist of 10 in the category for ‘Teaching, Training and Learning Practitioner’. She came to HCT after 30 years of teaching primary school children with learning difficulties, and is the Programme Manager for the Foundation Degree in Learning Support at HCT.
Nominees of the further education system in the Midlands gathered at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre on Thursday 9 October to celebrate being short-listed for the 2008 LSIS STAR Awards. Covering all categories, the 38 short-listed STARs from the Midlands come from a variety of workplaces including, FE colleges, sixth form colleges, adult and community learning centres, voluntary and community organisations, and work-based learning and offender learning providers. They exemplify breadth and diversity and are individuals who have worked above and beyond the call of duty, truly exceeding expectations. These people provide the skills needed to develop our workforce and drive our economic success nationwide.
The short-listed STARs were treated to a special lunch before being presented with their certificates by Joanne Malin from ITV Central News. Talented local students from Matthew Boulton College then entertained the nominees before photographs and filming in the afternoon.
The final award winners will be announced at a glittering Awards ceremony in Billingsgate, London on 24 November. Short-listed nominees and their nominators will gather with special guests together which include David Lammy MP, Minister for Skills, and hosts Mike Baker, BBC broadcaster, and Dr Floella Benjamin OBE.
Jean stated “I am surprised, excited and thrilled to be short-listed. When Christine Robertson submitted her nomination, she included some comments about me that were made by my students and that really meant the world. My students progress and development really is everything to me.
Christine Robertson who nominated Jean commented, that “recent student feedback rated Jean’s teaching, learning and tutor support as 100% Excellent and included comments such as ‘Tutor remarkable’, ‘Well done, Jean (again)!’ External agencies and college inspectors commended her achievement rate of 100% and progression rates well above national average.
