Building Blocks for the Future?
Herefordshire College of Technology provided building blocks for the future, when 30 children from Kington Primary School paid the College a visit on Friday 23rd of January.
Teachers from the Primary School contacted HCT to ask for assistance with a project for their year 5 students. Named ‘Project Columns’, the aim of the exercise was to give the youngsters a better understanding of strength in supporting structures.
Practical sessions were organised for the morning whereby the children were split into two groups.
One group participated in a brick column demonstration that took place in the brickwork workshop, part of the College's new Technology Centre. BTEC Introductory Diploma in Construction students at HCT constructed a series of columns for the school pupils to observe. To make the visit more enjoyable and interactive, the school group then had a chance to gain hands on experience in using sand, cement and bricks to create the foundations of a low wall.
Based in the Event Suite, the second group had the seemingly impossible task of supporting a single brick using just A4 pieces of paper and some sellotape!
The groups then swapped activities, giving all the children the opportunity to experience the fabulous facilities at the College, learning and having fun in the process.
