A Day in the Life of an Equine Student

FeedingA new day begins with the sound of horses happily chewing on their hay.  Morning yard duties commence with each student taking responsibility for mucking out and grooming their selected horse for that week.

Students are supervised by the friendly yard staff who encourage them to be efficient, thorough and, above all,  develop the essential skills required by employers in the Industry.

After morning duties, a warm cup of hot chocolate and a snack are devoured in the canteen before students disappear off to the classroom for lectures.

The timetable ensures a variety of theory and practical sessions, so each day brings a new learning experience. Lectures vary from science based subjects through to business management and horse care. Guest speakers from the equine industry regularly provide an insight into their profession and help students to focus on future careers. Continual assessment ensures students know how they are doing and through weekly tutorials can freely discuss any concerns with their personal tutor.

Students receive regular riding lessons on a range of experienced horses, enabling competent riders to hack around the 200 acre farm; cantering through the fields and woods or quietly walking by the lake and along the farm tracks.

The outdoor and indoor schools provide a quiet and safe environment to learn the fine art of dressage and the skill of show jumping.

Riding outThe two mile cross country track lets the more adventurous riders experience the thrill of jumping cross country fences, water and ditches. With heights to suit all abilities, everyone can take part and
imagine they are Pippa Funnel (or Leslie Law)!

Regular trips and visits to equine yards and events enhance students’ learning, with the highlight of the course being the annual study tours to Newmarket and the Cotswolds; not forgetting the yearly trip to the Badminton Horse Trials.

After afternoon lectures finish, it is back to the yard to carry out evening stable duties and to make sure the horses are clean, comfortable and have enough hay and water to see them through the night!
