Log Splitter - just what the Doctor ordered!
Doctor Derek Wilson contacted Herefordshire College of Technology’s Holme Lacy campus to see if the Forestry and Arboriculture students would like to undertake some replanting of a 2.4 hectare ancient woodland. The area of ground owned by Dr Wilson is within Windle Park, near Clifford.
Tutor Martyn Jackson jumped at the chance to give his students this golden opportunity and quickly accepted. Martin stated “Planting Windle Park Wood was very useful for the students, as it involved them in working to a planting specification from an early stage of the process. They had to interpret a plan and make sure that the rides, the glades and the trees themselves were in the correct place. They had to pay attention to detail in order to ensure that the trees were planted correctly and would establish quickly and thrive. The results so far are very encouraging”
Windle Park Wood is famed for being the possible meeting place of the Fair Rosamund Clifford and King Henry II. King Henry II came to Clifford Town to hunt and Windle Park was his choice of hunting ground.
Exceptionally pleased with the end result, Doctor Wilson decided to reward the students’ efforts by donating a brand new log splitting device. Doctor Wilson visited the campus and presented the item to Martyn and his students on Thursday May 14th.
Doctor Wilson commented “the students worked very hard and it gave me great pleasure to see the end result. I wanted to show my appreciation by giving them something that would greatly benefit their studies and for future students to come”
Now in great usage, the log splitter is proving to be a valuable asset to the Campus.
