Business Students Make Their Mark

The 'Bull-Shirt' teamHerefordshire College of Technology Business students made their mark when they took part in the ‘Make Your Mark Challenge 2009’. The Make Your Mark Challenge is the UK’s largest one-day enterprise competition for students aged 14-19. Last year over 56,000 students took part.

The Make Your Mark Challenge is operated as part of the Global Entrepreneurship Week, which encourages people and countries to work together to find new ways to succeed in the business market.

Split into 7 teams, the students were issued with a secret brief which was released on midnight Monday 16th November 2009. The students had to come up with a new and innovative business idea that takes its inspiration from something local. The business could be a product or a service – as long as it’s a ‘cool’ creation, a profitable business that minimises its impact on the environment and makes money.

The students needed to take into consideration how products or services are produced and transported, whether sustainability, re-using items and recycling was viable in their business.

The students had just 3 minutes to pitch their idea to a panel of judges in a 'Dragon’s Den' style. Team 'Bull-Shirt', cooked up the idea of the day with a business idea producing a clothing range using a play on words and monogrammed with the Hereford Bull.

A final team of students will be selected to compete in the regional finals on Tuesday 1st December, held at Garden Organic Ryton in Coventry.
