Success for HCT at the Welsh International Super Cup

Hereford United Youth TeamHerefordshire College of Technology’s budding football stars are celebrating another successful year at the Welsh International Super Cup Tournament. The students are studying the BTEC National Diploma in Sports Performance and Excellence and entered the competition as part of the Hereford United Youth Team.

This  prestigious tournament attracts scouts from several Premiership clubs and has been the starting point for many of the game’s top names including Robbie Keane and Michael Owen. Held at the superb Blaendolau playing fields in Aberystwyth, this year’s event attracted 127 teams from all over the world for the 25th anniversary of the competition.

The tournament has several classes and the students found themselves grouped with teams from the United States, India, Canada and Wales.

With emphatic wins against the two American teams and then ‘Simla Youngs’ from India, the Welsh side ‘Corris’ provided the team’s first real test, but again the Hereford side were victorious with a 2-0 score line. The next game saw the team facing stubborn initial resistance from the Canadians before eventually running out 7-1 winners.

The Welsh Super Cup TrophyFriday was finals day, with the top two sides in each group facing each other. It was the Welsh Team, ‘Corris’ who were to provide the opposition but this time there was to be no repeat of the previous low scoring encounter. The team’s ability to keep the ball wore down the opposition and provided the platform for a convincing 8-1 victory.

Tutor, Colin Williams stated, "It was a satisfying week, with the object of improving fitness and team morale achieved. We are now unbeaten in two years of this competition”.
