FREE Taster Days at Holme Lacy Campus
- Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, this event has been cancelled
The Holme Lacy Taster Days are for pupils in years 9, 10 or 11 who want to experience life as a Holme Lacy student.
If you are in Year 11 and know which subject area you are interested in studying, you may prefer to attend one of our Holme Lacy Information Events and speak to a specialist tutor about the right course for you.
Apart from having fun, the purpose of your day with us is to find out about the range of vocational courses that we offer and how your experiences at College will be invaluable when you come to look for a job in your chosen career or progress to Higher Education.
A Typical Day
(activities may vary dependant upon time of year)
Tour of the Campus and Estate: you will be shown around the campus facilities and have a tour of Pound Farm Estate.
Activities:
When you register to attend you will be asked to choose 3 out of 11 activities; these are typical practical activities that students do at Holme Lacy on a day-to-day basis.
If you become a student at Holme Lacy you will have the advantage of being able to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to hands-on experience, whether it’s in one of the workshops, on the animal care unit, the equine unit, on the farm or in the fields.
Choose from:
- Farm stock duties; an opportunity to work with farm stock carrying out tasks essential for their care and welfare
- Welding (you can even take your own creation home with you!)
- Blacksmithing; light the fire and bend some steel
- Animal Experience; meet the mammals, reptiles, aquatics, exotics and find out how we look after them
- Horse Husbandry; visit our BHS approved equestrian centre and have-a-go at stripping and cleaning tack or grooming and mucking out
- Horticulture design and practice; visit our gardens and glasshouses and try your hand at practical gardening
- Mountain biking; expend some energy and visit the more remote parts of the Estate
- Canoeing for beginners (bring a change of clothing!)
- Forestry experience; calculate the height and age of a tree
- Countryside; make a bird box, learn the ancient art of hedgelaying or carry out a hedge survey
- Tractor Driving; ever got behind the wheel of a tractor? Well now you will get the chance
Lunch
Please bring a packed-lunch with you
Clothing and Footwear; please wear sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the outdoors and your chosen activities
Farewell but hopefully not Goodbye
At the end of the day we will all meet up to receive feedback. You will also be given a certificate as a souvenir of your day!
Come by yourself, with a friend or as a group, for example with your school or Connexions. There will be lots of other people here with you.
