HCT at the Three Counties Show
This year’s Three Counties Show enjoyed fantastic weather and saw a terrific number of visitors.
Each year the Blacksmithing and Farriery Access students and staff have a presence at the show, displaying a variety of work as well as testing their skills in a number of competitions. All take part in the setting up, running of the exhibits and the break down, providing students with a valuable three days whereby they can show off some of their superb work as well as enjoy competing with other students. The Blacksmithing stand was superbly presented and won ‘Gold’ in the Trades Stands Awards and won’ Supreme Champion’ for best exhibit.
Our students and staff achieved awards against stiff competition - successes included; David Skinner, (NETS) who won Reserve Champion as well as the Traditional Blacksmithing class. Edward Blower (BA Hons) came 3rd in the Contemporary class and 4th place went to Marcus Butler Denman (National Diploma in Blacksmithing). Sam Pask won the Inter-College Shield and the Frank Day Memorial trophy. A special mention needs to go to James Holliday (Farriery Access) who completed in the Open Live competition and achieved a very credible result. Matthew Boultwood (National Award in Blacksmithing) won the Student Live competition, Dan Thomas (Farriery Access) came second and Harry Harris (Farriery Access) came third.
BTEC National Diploma in Agriculture students gained a real insight into preparing and handling show cattle when they turned out two well presented Hereford Cattle on Friday 18th June for the Young Heifer class. The students were involved with handling the cattle from calves, ensuring they were washed, groomed and halter trained ready for the big day. Well done to all!
The Forestry and Countryside team put on informative forestry demonstrations and assisted with the forestry area of the Show. Both staff and students ensured the ring was a hive of activity over the weekend with demonstrations including felling cuts, the operation of a forwarder and the operation of a mobile saw mill. After a 5 year break, the area proved to be a very popular attraction.
