Cross Campus Learning

Rural Crafts Team Leader - Ian Coleman shares his expertise with young engineering studentsEngineering Lecturer Chris Thompson from HCT's Hereford campus joined forces this week with Agricultural Engineering Lecturer and Rural Crafts Team Leader Ian Coleman from the Holme Lacy campus. Eight students in their second year of studying for the BTEC National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering benefitted from the combined expertise, which offered the perfect practical setting for the students to see their theoretical knowledge in a real-industry context.

The session covered hydraulics systems, fundamentals, function, application and testing on active machinery. There will be a further follow-up session at the Hereford campus to consolidate, analyse data and test results, which will complete the learning process. Ian Coleman commented “Utilising facilities and expertise from both of the campuses offers a really inclusive learning experience and we hope that it encourages more cross-campus learning in the future.”

Chris Thompson was also keen to emphasise how well the session went “The students took an active part in the morning answering questions and sometimes posing questions. Ian’s expertise was really appreciated. I’d like to say a big thank you to both of the Team Leaders, Ian Coleman and Paul Reynolds, who have made this learning opportunity possible as a result of the ongoing excellent relations between the two campuses. ”
