A Day of Natural History

Oxford Natural History Museum tripHCT’s Animal Care Level 2 and Level 3 Animal Management students had an exciting day at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. The museum houses the University's scientific collections of zoological, entomological and geological specimens. Its entomological collection alone houses over 25,000 arthropod types, and comprises over 5 million specimens.

Laura Clarke, Animal Care Lecturer and Course Co-ordinator, explained how the students used the experience to complement their studies,

“Our Level 3 students benefitted greatly from not only the exhibitions, but also a talk from one of the education officers at the museum. This included exploring the fame which surrounds Darwin and a visit to the discussion room where he discussed his theory of evolution with his supporting contemporaries. It was a fabulous experience for the students to see the many corridors packed to the brim with so many varied samples.”

“The focus for Level 2 students was classification. The museum’s vast collection offered a great platform for this and students busied themselves with finding vertebrates and invertebrates and recording their characteristics.”
