Safety Day for Farmers

Make the promise - come home safeOver 300 farmers attended Herefordshire College of Technology’s  Holme Lacy campus last week to attend an event run by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) which raised awareness of health and safety on British farms. In the last ten years, 455 people died and many more have suffered terrible injuries.

The day was an excellent opportunity for farmers to get practical advice and take action to avoid people being killed, injured or made ill on their farms. There were six practical demonstrations run over half a day and delivered by LANTRA instructors, who have an industry background or are themselves farmers. The demonstrations covered health and safety topics that are the top cause of death and injury in the industry such as transport, falls, livestock handling and machinery maintenance.

As well as these practical demonstrations there was also advice and information available from the College, Herefordshire Rural Hub, IAgSA, First Aid Techniques & Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.

The event was free to attend and encouraged farmers to make a promise to themselves and their family to come home safe. To sign up to 'Make The Promise', or for more information on agricultural safety, visit www.hse.gov.uk/agriculture.
