How Many Trees Would a Woodchuck Chuck?

Chipping the Christmas trees at Holme Lacy campusForestry, Countryside Management and Horticulture students had no time for tongue twisters last week as the ‘Charity Christmas Tree Chipping’ got underway. Forestry student Josh Arrowsmith was one of the many students who braved the wet and windy weather, “We wanted to say thank you to all those people that brought their Christmas Trees in for us. It is the first time we’d done chipping so it was a good experience. We’ve been doing a lot of coppice cutting recently from a neglected coppice we’re restoring, including Ash, Oak and Sweet Chestnut.”

Forestry Lecturer, John Tetley added “We’re hoping the Christmas tree chippings can go towards making a path in the new arboretum we are planning for later this year. We were hoping for more trees to chip, but with such bad weather over Christmas it was difficult for people to bring them out here. Next year we are thinking about arranging a pick-up service to make it a bit easier for the public.” During the afternoon students were also green woodworking and made a charcoal kiln, which was ambitious in the wet weather. Students will check later on in the week to see if it was successful in making charcoal.
