Young Artist Makes her Mark for WWF
Second year Animal Management student Eleanor Jones entered her course via a slightly more unusual route than most. Having started a degree in Illustration she realised that she wanted to be more interactive with the subjects of her artwork and so her love of animals led her to study at Herefordshire College of Technology’s Holme Lacy Campus.
The course’s investigative project gave her the opportunity to utilise her exceptional drawing skills whilst raising money and awareness for WWF, her most favoured animal charity. “I’m still making the bookmarks at the moment before they go on sale. I’m hoping to make 10 designs in total, selling them around the College and to friends and family. It has been a challenge as they take quite a bit of time, though I have managed to fit them in around my other assignments. My friend Mart Dykes is knitting animal key rings so hopefully that will interest people too.”
The images are produced using mixed media including pencil, watercolours and acrylics. Eleanor explained how she has a variety of artistic influences ranging from Wildlife Artist Polyanna Pickering to Terry Pratchett’s Book Illustrator, Paul Kidby. She is hoping that her continued studying, working directly with animals will further develop her opportunities of having them as subjects for her artwork. “I’ve been talking to my tutor about how to develop my work further and am considering options for when I finish college this year.” Eleanor’s bookmarks will be on sale soon at £1.50 each (proceeds to WWF) and those wishing to purchase them can get in touch with Animal Care Lecturer Kate Smith at the Holme Lacy Campus.
